How to standardize phone numbers in Excel

Phone columns often mix formats: (555) 123-4567, 555.123.4567, +1 555 123 4567. Standardizing them prevents duplicate detection failures and validation errors.

Use the Excel cleaner tool

Pick a target format

E.164 (+15551234567) works internationally. National format is fine for single-country lists — stay consistent.

Strip formatting characters

Parentheses, dashes, and dots are display formatting. Store digits in a consistent pattern for matching.

Handle extensions separately

Split extension into its own column rather than embedding in the phone field.
